Speed picking up
Damn, if I’d gotten in two seconds sooner, I’d officially have a 15 mph speed. Oh well, next time.

Nothing like Carolina humitidy
A hot ride today at about 2 p.m., in the sweltering summer North Carolina weather. It rained yesterday, so it was extra humid.
Kept the pace above 14 mph, which is my new goal for my rides these days. As I get more fit, I’d like to see 15 mph quite consistently.

Good ride, bad ODO
So I bought a Bell Wireless Speedometer, and it obviously comes with an odometer. I was really looking forward to being able to count my miles without having to ride pre-measured routes. Well, I installed it last night, and it worked in the house when I tested it by spinning the wheel. When I got out on the ride today, it stopped working after 1.6 miles. I stopped a few times to try and tinker with it, and couldn’t get it to work for more than a few rotations of the bike’s tire. Boo that!
I ended up riding my 12-mile pre-measured course, and the think ended up only logging about 2 miles of it. The ride was good, and after adjusting the seat, my speed it really picking up as is my endurace.
The toughest part of the ride today was the wind. It blew right into my face for the last six miles. For a guy who’s spent most of his life widening his chest and shoulders in the weight room, my wide frame acted like a parachute. I really had to push it to cut through the wind. Of course, riding upright on a mountain bike, I couldn’t lean forward and aviod the drag.
But, it was still a great ride.

A game of inches (and gnats)
I raised my bicycle seat about an inch and a half just before today’s ride, and the difference is amazing. The ride was so much smoother, even though the pace wasn’t greater (but more on that later). I was able to stay in a much higher gear for the majority of the ride, and the pedal strokes were so much easier. My pace wasn’t faster for three reasons. The first being that I didn’t push nearly as hard as I could have. Secondly, there were a few things when caused me to slow down greatly or stop (traffic, another ride going to opposite way on a very narrow part of the path). Thirdly, it was the gnats!!!
Swarms and swarms of the little buggers. Many times, I had to duck my head — thus destroying my vision — and just barrel through the swarms. When I got back, gnats all in the hair and down my shirt. I got bitten (or stung, whatever they do) several times, as well.
When I got back from the ride, I felt like I could have done another five miles. That’s a good feeling. But I didn’t want to deal with any more gnat bites!
Another first about today’s workout was that it was the first time I’ve actually paired up two of the exercises (except for simulation on the gym). I did the running first, because that’s the weaker of the two. I ran the 5k first, and really slowed the pace on the last mile to make sure I saved enough energy for the bike ride. The gnats tormented my run, too.
After the run, I sprayed off what gnats I could with the hose outside, and jumped on the bike for a great ride.
In a few weeks, I go to the bike first and then the run. But in a few weeks!
PS — I’ve got to give credit to khylowens for asking me if my bike was fitted to me correctly. That’s what gave my the idea of tinkering with the seat height.

Pulled back on the pace
I’ve really been pushing it hard on the bike for the past few rides (short ones) and haven’t noticed a great speed increase even though I’ve been tired, dog tired, after the ride. Today, I decided to go a little slower over a longer distance. I didn’t go leisurely slow, but I went just under the point where my legs burned the entire time. The pace dropped below 14 mph, so I’d like to get to the point where I can go greater distances and keep it above 15. Also, my right hand goes numb after about the fifth mile or so. What’s that about?
