For my new ambition, I’ve decided to give myself plenty of time. As of mid-June, 2008, I have a little under a year before I want to compete in the 2009 Lake Kristi Triathlon.
I’m a sportswriter for the local paper, and recently I was formatting the results of this year’s event. I’ve gotten similar results like this in the past, and I’ve always imagined what it would be like to compete in such and event. Finally, I decided to find out. I’ve been behind a desk for a while, and when I did work out I pretty much stuck with the weights, while only using cardio training as a way burn a few calories here and there. In the past, I’ve been far from an endurance athlete, preferring strength - and sprint-oriented sports. The closest I came to endurance was four years of soccer, playing mostly as a midfielder, as a youth. During most of two season, I was a keeper, anyway.
With that said, this is a totally new undertaking for me. Swimming, by far, will be my weak spot … but that’s what training’s for, right?
