Barrier bashed
It’s been a long time since I’ve had the feeling I had on tonight’s run. It was that feeling you get when you’ve got nothing in the tank, and you know you’re maxing out your effort. I used to get the feeling after football practice and toward the end of boxing workouts.
I just had to beat 30 minutes on tonight’s run. And with the finish line in sight, I kicked with all I had. I’m sure I made a face similar to something Sly Stallone makes in the last five minutes of any Rocky movie.
Just a little info about the course I run. The first and third miles are rather flat (I do live in eastern North Carolina, after all). The second mile, however, is right around the river area and has sizable hills. The second mile is always the slowest.
Tonight, I think my miles were: A touch over nine minutes for the first, 11 for the second and just under 10 for the third. I do know that I reached the exact half-way point at 15:05. That means I really picked it up for the finish, which felt great (but only when I had actually finished!).
When I reached the finish line, I had nothing in the tank, and my dog was waiting in the back yard not barking or jumping like usual, but he just stood there with his ears up, most likely wondering why I was hunched over.
Now, if I can just keep these 5Ks under 30 minutes for a while, that would be really swell … yeah, I said “swell.”
